Meet Brighton Mulika

Born in a slum and orphaned at just 6 years old, Mulika Brighton didn’t have the best start in life. When he was very young, he contracted a rare disease, which left him profoundly close to becoming deaf, which still requires monitoring on a weekly basis. Having faced Meningitis means that Brighton may remain half deaf. Many deaf children can’t go to schools for the deaf children, being very expensive and are very few here in Uganda. So, Brighton is struggling with education being conducted through Lungala Education Center. For his age this is challenging, as he has to continue with his education. He resides at his grandparents in Lungala village. Special attention is given to Brighton to encourage him to remain in school. Despite everything he has been through, Brighton is now a very happy boy who lives a life of a normal person. He is a big part of the Lungala Education Center community and can be seen smiling every day.

Elizabeth Naligo’s Story

Naligo Elizabeth, 7 years, lives with an aunt, a single mother with three children of her own who earns less than $1 a day with which she has to support everyone. The family lives in one room in the Nkonge village in Mpigi district. Elizabeth was attending school in very far away from the village. Her aunt couldn’t afford the school and lunch fees. When we opened up Lungala Education Center, she was admitted and now attends school everyday. She now eats a good meal each day at school but sometimes she misses school because her aunt wants her to stay at the small grocery to sell the produce. Her aunt earns less than $1 a day by selling cabbage, tomatoes, carrots, greens, onions etc. Elizabeth and her cousins are malnourished and desperately needs a balanced diet. We sometimes share with them remaining food from the school so that they get a second meal a day. She is facing severe undernourishment. We however conduct monitoring of her health to boost her learning skills.

Here’s Matovu Elvis

When Matovu Elvis (12 years) was brought to Lungala Education Centre, he was in a very poor state. Life in their home was very difficult for him and his mother as they both had to work as casual labourers in a stone quarry earning less than $1.50 a day. Elvis is a sickle cell patient who needs a lot of attention most especially his nutrition. Elvis was unable to eat a regular diet and sometimes went without food. The mother was unable to provide the vital medication his son daily. In January 2023, Elvis came to Lungala Education Center as a safe haven away from child labor activities. We are able to offer education, breakfast and lunch. Her mother is unable to pay school fees, provide life-saving medication, a balanced diet, etc for the survival of Elvis. We have supported some hospital bills but can’t manage everything since they are on a monthly basis. We are supporting Elvis with the little we have so that he remains healthy and thriving.
